We all at some point in our life have created our own list of travel destinations to before we die, we choose those destinations based on what we believe we can learn their and gain from that place. Learning has always been one of the guiding principles of traveling from time immemorial Our forefathers traveled thousands of kilometers and spread themselves all over the world, they roamed around the area learned about its merits and started making use of the natural gifts the area provided them. They were driven by curiosity to learn, to know and understand about the place they are in and how it can make a better person out of them.
In the ancients times Kings used to send their special envoys to land far off in order to learn about people living in those far off destinations. These envoys after reaching a place filled with human beings will go around the village or city to gather information about how people in these new places lived, what language they talked in, what kind of food they made and a lot of other things. It was through this roaming around that cultural exchange took place between different civilizations of the world at that time. These people were responsible for the first sort of globalization known to man.
Marco Polo one of the greatest traveler mankind has ever known travelled throughout the Eastern hemisphere looking around, talking to people, staying at new destinations and learning. He brought the beauty and advancement of the Eastern civilizations to the notice of the European ones and led to a major contribution in the development of cultural exchange. All this because he tried to discover the places he visited by roaming around. There are many example of great traveler throughout history who shared the same trait amongst themselves.
In todays globalised world where the world has shrunk to a village and information about anything on this planet is just a click away, roaming around to discover a destination, to learn more about it might seem a futile exercise but it is not so. Yes internet may provide you all the information you need about the travel destination, where you are traveling to but that information is usually the mainstream or assembly line information about the place. If you really seek to know your destination, learn more about it and feel yourself a part of it you must go around the place, go through all the nooks and crannies, talk to people and stuff like that. Doing so allows you a great deal of insight about the place its culture, how its people are, what they think about and many such things.
Really a destinations true worth is known to those who care to really see its heart and that heart lies on its street, as those street have written on them the history of the destination. If you want to learn and want to feel like being a part of a place the next time you go traveling to destination do not forget to roam around to learn something new.
