Microsoft unveils new Xbox One game console

REDMOND, Washington (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp gave the world the first look at its new game console on Tuesday, hoping the newly named Xbox One will build on a solid core of gamer fans and become a hub for living room entertainment.

The third-generation Microsoft console, coming eight years after the Xbox 360, was unveiled by games unit chief Don Mattrick at an event at the software company's campus near Seattle.

The Xbox One is an "ultimate all-in-one entertainment system," Mattrick said.

The new device interacts with a user's television, responds to voice and gesture commands, and includes Skype video calling.

It will have 8 gigabytes of memory, with an updated controller and new-generation Kinect sensor that communicates a user's voice and gesture commands to the console. The technology is built on the Xbox operating system and the kernel of Windows software to handle Internet-based content.

The Xbox One will chiefly compete with Nintendo Co.'s new Wii U and Sony Corp.'s forthcoming PlayStation 4 for a bigger slice of the $65 billion-a-year computer game market.

But the world's largest software company also sees it as a broader strategic piece in the battle with Apple Inc., Google Inc. and others to control consumer entertainment in the age of tablets and smartphones.

Microsoft's stock was off 5 cents at $35.03 in afternoon trading on Nasdaq.

Anthony Weiner Is Running For Mayor Of New York

Anthony-Weiner-gym-pics-e1308250717226

Last we saw Anthony Weiner he was retreating with his ?manhood? tucked away in embarrassment as his Twitter sexting scandal led to his early exit from Congress and a long trip to wife Huma Abedin?s doghouse. Politicker reports he?s attempting to get back into politics:

He?s in. After weeks of speculation, disgraced Rep. Anthony Weiner has officially thrown his hat into the mayor?s race, announcing he?s running with a new video posted on his revamped campaign website.

?Look, I made some big mistakes. And I know I let a lot of people down. But I?ve also learned some tough lessons,? he says in the video, which opens with a family scene of the former Councilman and his wife, Huma Abedin, having breakfast in their kitchen with their son.

?I?m running for mayor ?cause I?ve been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it my entire life. And I hope I get a second chance to work for you,? he says.

?The announcement comes nearly two years to the day after Mr. Weiner destroyed his Congressional career by tweeting out a photo of his underwear-clad crotch that had been intended as a private message?and then repeatedly lying about it in interviews and at press conferences, claiming his account had been hacked. He eventually admitted to having inappropriate relationships with half a dozen women online, sending them lewd text messages and images.

Between Weiner and front-runner Christine Quinn?s bullying, bulimia, and alcoholism it should be an interesting race?

Google Drive for Android updated with card UI and refined scanner funtion

Cards, cards, cards... that's the refrain around the Google campus these days. Everything is getting turned into cards. That now includes your documents stored on Drive, too. The Google Drive app for Android was updated today with a whole new UI that moves towards the refined Holo design of the Play Music app and displays your uploaded files as "cards," though, you can always revert to a tweaked list view. The cards offer a thumbnail preview along with the file name and an icon indicating the type of document. The ability to snap photos and have the results turned into a OCR-processed PDF has also been updated slightly. The feature is now called "scan" and it automatically crops photos to contain only the document you need to upload. Lastly, you can finally tweak text settings in sheets, delivering a much more robust mobile formatting experience. Just hit up the Play Store to get your update now.

Homeland Security monitors tea party at Florida IRS protest

bizpacreview.com
Mayt 21, 2013

In spite of confusing messages and midday rain showers, the tea party showed up in force at the local IRS office in Orlando on Tuesday to express its dissatisfaction with the agency.

On a warm, humid Central Florida day, dozens of protestors turned out in spite of an inconvenient location and a somewhat inexplicable call to suspend the event amid a series of inconsistent messages from various tea party factions.

The protest was held in Maitland, Florida, a short drive north of Orlando and not surprisingly, North Lake Tea Party, long the standard bearer of the Central Florida tea party movement, was on hand.

(AP) ? Helmeted rescue workers raced Tuesday to complete the search for survivors and the dead in the Oklahoma City suburb where a mammoth tornado destroyed countless homes, cleared lots down to bare red earth and claimed 24 lives.

Scientists concluded the storm was a rare and extraordinarily powerful type of twister known as an EF5, which is capable of lifting reinforced buildings off the ground, hurling cars like missiles and stripping trees completely free of bark.

Meanwhile, residents of Moore began returning to their homes a day after the tornado smashed some neighborhoods into jagged wood scraps and gnarled pieces of metal. In place of their houses, many families found only empty lots.

The fire chief said he was confident there are no more bodies or survivors in the rubble.

"I'm 98 percent sure we're good," Gary Bird said Tuesday at a news conference with the governor, who had just completed an aerial tour of the disaster zone.

Authorities were so focused on the search effort that they had yet to establish the full scope of damage along the storm's long, ruinous path.

The death toll was revised downward from 51 after the state medical examiner said some victims may have been counted twice in the confusion.

By Tuesday afternoon, every damaged home had been searched at least once, Bird said. His goal was to conduct three searches of each building just to be certain there were no more bodies or survivors.

The fire chief was hopeful that could be completed before nightfall but efforts were being hampered by heavy rain. Crews also continued a brick-by-brick search of the rubble of a school that was blown apart with many children inside.

No additional survivors or bodies have been found since Monday night, Bird said.

Survivors emerged with harrowing accounts of the storm's wrath, which many endured as they shielded loved ones.

Chelsie McCumber grabbed her 2-year-old son, Ethan, wrapped him in jackets and covered him with a mattress before they squeezed into a coat closet of their house. McCumber sang to her child when he complained it was getting hot inside the small space.

"I told him we're going to play tent in the closet," she said, beginning to cry.

"I just felt air so I knew the roof was gone," she said Tuesday, standing under the sky where her roof should have been. The home was littered with wet gray insulation and all of their belongings.

"Time just kind of stood still" in the closet, she recalled. "I was kind of holding my breath thinking this isn't the worst of it. I didn't think that was it. I kept waiting for it to get worse."

"When I got out, it was worse than I thought," she said.

Gov. Mary Fallin lamented the loss of life, especially of the nine children killed, but she celebrated the town's resilience.

"We will rebuild, and we will regain our strength," Fallin said.

In describing the bird's-eye view of the damage, the governor said many houses were "taken away," leaving "just sticks and bricks, basically. It's hard to tell if there was a structure there or not."

From the air, large stretches of town could been seen where every home had been cut to pieces. Some homes were sucked off their concrete slabs. A pond was filled with piles of wood and an overturned trailer.

Also visible were large patches of red earth where the tornado scoured the land down to the soil. Some tree trunks were still standing, but the winds ripped away their leaves, limbs and bark.

In revising its estimate of the storm's power, the National Weather Service said the tornado, which was on the ground for 40 minutes, was a top-of-the-scale EF5 twister with winds of at least 200 mph.

The agency upgraded the tornado from an EF4 on the enhanced Fujita scale based on reports from a damage-assessment team, said spokeswoman Keli Pirtle. Monday's twister was at least a half-mile wide, and it was the first EF5 tornado of 2013.

Other search-and-rescue teams focused their efforts at Plaza Towers Elementary, where the storm ripped off the roof, knocked down walls and destroyed the playground as students and teachers huddled in hallways and bathrooms.

Seven of the nine dead children were killed at the school, but several students were pulled alive from under a collapsed wall and other heaps of mangled debris. Rescue workers passed the survivors down a human chain of parents and neighborhood volunteers. Parents carried children in their arms to a triage center in the parking lot. Some students looked dazed, others terrified.

Plaza Towers and another school in Oklahoma City that was not as severely damaged did not have reinforced storm shelters, or safe rooms, said Albert Ashwood is director of the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management.

More than 100 schools across the state do have safe rooms, he said, adding that it's up to each jurisdiction to set priorities for which schools get limited funding for safe rooms.

Ashwood said a shelter would not necessarily have saved more lives at Plaza Towers.

"When you talk about any kind of safety measures ... it's a mitigating measure, it's not an absolute," he told reporters. "There's not a guarantee that everyone will be totally safe."

Officials were still trying to account for a handful of children not found at the school who may have gone home early with their parents, Bird said Tuesday.

Evidence of the storm's fury stretched in every direction: Roofs were torn off houses, exposing metal rods left twisted like pretzels. Cars sat in heaps, crumpled and sprayed with caked-on mud. Insulation and siding was piled up against any walls still standing. Yards were littered with pieces of wood, nails and pieces of electric poles.

President Barack Obama pledged to provide federal help and mourned the death of young children who were killed while "trying to take shelter in the safest place they knew ? their school."

The town of Moore "needs to get everything it needs right away," he said Tuesday.

Moore has been one of the fastest-growing suburbs of Oklahoma City, attracting middle-income families and young couples looking for stable schools and affordable housing. The town's population has grown over the last decade as developers built subdivisions for people who wanted to avoid the urban problems and schools of Oklahoma City but couldn't afford pricier college-town Norman next door.

Many residents commute to jobs in Oklahoma City or to Tinker Air Force Base, which is about 20 minutes away.

Bacteria use hydrogen, carbon dioxide to produce electricity

May 19, 2013 ? Researchers have engineered a strain of electricity-producing bacteria that can grow using hydrogen gas as its sole electron donor and carbon dioxide as its sole source of carbon.

Researchers at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst report their findings at the 113th General Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology.

"This represents the first result of current production solely on hydrogen," says Amit Kumar, a researcher on the study who, along with his co-authors are part of the Lovley Lab Group at the university.

Under the leadership of Derek Lovley the lab group has been studying Geobacter bacteria since Lovley first isolated Geobacter metallireducens in sand sediment from the Potomac River in 1987. Geobacter species are of interest because of their bioremediation, bioenergy potential, novel electron transfer capabilities, the ability to transfer electrons outside the cell and transport these electrons over long distances via conductive filaments known as microbial nanowires.

Kumar and his colleagues studied a relative of G. metallireducens called Geobacter sulfurreducens, which has the ability to produce electricity by reducing organic carbon compounds with a graphite electrode like iron oxide or gold to serve as the sole electron acceptor. They genetically engineered a strain of the bacteria that did not need organic carbon to grow in a microbial fuel cell.

"The adapted strain readily produced electrical current in microbial fuel cells with hydrogen gas as the sole electron donor and no organic carbon source," says Kumar, who notes that when the hydrogen supply to the microbial fuel cell was intermittently stopped electrical current dropped significantly and cells attached to the electrodes did not generate any significant current.

This research was supported by funding by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Office of Naval Research.

Blackstone, Pactera insiders make $680 million offer

By Greg Roumeliotis

(Reuters) - Pactera Technology International Ltd said on Monday that Blackstone Group LP , together with the company's management, made a $680.3 million non-binding proposal to take China's largest technology outsourcing firm private.

Pactera said it expected its board of directors to form a special committee of independent directors to consider the consortium's offer of $7.50 per share. Pactera shares surged 31.1 percent to $6.90.

Suspicion over accounting standards has been a major drag on U.S.-listed Chinese companies, giving management at some companies an opportunity to team up with private equity firms and make offers that capitalize on big discounts to peers on the Hong Kong and Chinese stock markets.

Prior to Monday's announced proposal, Pactera shares were down 33.8 percent this year. By comparison, the NASDAQ <.ixic>, where it is listed, is up 15.9 percent.

Pactera was trading at 3.3 times its projected 12-month earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization as of the end of trading on Friday, compared with an average 9.1 times for its peers, according to Thomson Reuters data.

In a letter on Monday, Blackstone said it had teamed up with Pactera's non-executive chairman and VanceInfo co-founder Chris Chen, Pactera Chief Executive Tiak Koon Loh, and three of the company's executive committee members.

Chen and Loh, which had respective stakes in the company of 3.9 percent and 1.7 percent as of April 15, would roll over their equity in the proposed deal, which would be financed with equity from Blackstone and bank debt, according to the letter.

Funding for buyouts of Chinese companies is usually done through offshore holding companies but many banks will not finance such deals due to the risk of non-payment. Limited financing has restricted deal sizes and has increased the amount of equity that private equity firms have to invest.

The consortium's offer was only a preliminary indication of interest and represented a 39 percent premium over Pactera's volume-weighted average closing share price during the last 30 trading days, according to Blackstone.

The offer came one month after Blackstone abandoned an effort to outbid another buyout firm that teamed up with a CEO to take a technology company private - the $24.4 billion offer from Michael Dell and Silver Lake for computer maker Dell Inc .

Beijing-based Pactera, formed last year through a merger of HiSoft Technology International Ltd and VanceInfo Technologies Inc, offers technology outsourcing and consulting services to blue-chip companies across the world.

PRIVATE EQUITY IN CHINA

Blackstone is making the offer for Pactera through its latest $16.2 billion global private equity fund, one of the biggest buyout funds in the world. Leading the deal is Edward Huang, who joined Blackstone last year from Morgan Stanley's Asian private equity unit.

China's scale and economic growth, which was 7.7 percent in the first quarter of this year, still draws investors to private equity, yet often disappointing returns mean global funds are much more discerning about where they put their money.

When successful, however, deals in China can pay off handsomely. Carlyle Group LP for example made a $4.3 billion profit excluding dividends - five times what it invested - when it exited China Pacific Insurance (Group) Co Ltd , Reuters calculations in January showed.

But Carlyle has also demonstrated how deals in China can go sour due to accounting irregularities. It headlines in 2011 after fraud allegations were levied at China Forestry Holdings Co Ltd and China Agritech Inc in high profile accounting-related cases, dealing a blow to the Washington D.C.-based firm's image.

The biggest leveraged buyout in China has so far been the $3.7 billion acquisition of Focus Media Holding Ltd by a Carlyle-led consortium, which was approved by the company's shareholders last month.

Focus Media, which operates advertising screens in offices, elevators and supermarkets across China, had faced persistent allegations from short-seller Muddy Waters that it overstated its assets and overpaid for acquisitions.

Citigroup Global Markets Inc is advising the Blackstone consortium on its offer for Pactera. The company said it expected that its special committee would retain a financial adviser and legal counsel to assist it in its work.

David Beckham Cries At Last Home Game (VIDEO)

David Beckham got emotional after playing his final home game for Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday.

The legendary footballer announced his retirement earlier this week.

As the PSG captain departed the field, the stadium erupted in applause. When he embraced his teammates, he began to cry.

Later, he admitted that the game had been difficult one for him.

"To end my career in front of a crowd like that, with players like that, it's very special," he said. "It started about 20 minutes before that, to be honest. I started thinking and then, you know, I couldn't concentrate by then, and it was difficult. You know, you try to hold the emotion back because it is what it is, but it's difficult."

Jamie Dimon under pressure ahead of investor vote

NEW YORK (AP) ? Jamie Dimon, chairman and CEO of the country's biggest bank, faces a key test this week: His shareholders are voting on whether to let him keep both jobs.

It's been just more than a year since his bank, JPMorgan Chase, revealed a surprise trading loss that tarnished its usually stellar reputation in Washington and on Wall Street, and what a difference it has made. Shareholder groups are calling for the bank to strip him of his chairman job, a move that would be a bruising referendum against a man who's normally chieftain even among other big-bank CEOs. They're also lobbying to kick out multiple long-time board members, saying they should have done more to detect or prevent the trading loss.

In all, it's a powerful reminder of how fortunes can quickly shift in the banking industry, and how banks, supposedly chastened by the financial crisis, are still stumbling through regulatory and legal crises.

On Tuesday, at the bank's annual meeting in Tampa, Fla., union group AFSCME, the New York City Comptroller's Office and other fund managers will ask bank shareholders to approve a proposal asking JPMorgan to split the roles of chairman and CEO, and to give the chairman job to someone who isn't a bank employee. The underlying idea is to install stricter checks and balances against Dimon and other top bank executives.

A similar measure got 40 percent approval at last year's meeting, which was held just days after the bank announced the so-called London whale loss. In the previous six annual meetings where Dimon has been both chairman and CEO, shareholders have been asked about separating the roles four times, and last year marked the highest level of votes in favor of the idea. In 2007 and 2008, only about 15 percent of shareholders voted for similar measures.

"Even a Master of the Universe can be swallowed by a London whale," said AFSCME president Lee Saunders. The loss is nicknamed for the location of the trader who made the outsized bets on complex debt securities that went wrong, eventually losing the bank $6 billion.

Both Glass Lewis and Institutional Shareholder Services, two influential firms that give advice to big shareholders, are recommending that the jobs be split. Glass Lewis is also recommending getting rid of six of the 10 independent board members, and ISS recommends booting three.

The board has defended Dimon. It says that keeping him in both jobs is its "most effective leadership model." It's an arrangement that they are used to: Six of the 10 independent board members are or have been the simultaneous chairman and CEO of other businesses. Lee Raymond, who is No. 2 on the board behind Dimon, is the retired chairman and CEO of Exxon Mobil.

The board also points out that JPMorgan has done well under Dimon, who guided it through the financial crisis and nursed it to emerge as one of the strongest banks in the country. It says it meets regularly without him and has taken steps to clean up the practices that caused the trading loss, including cutting Dimon's 2012 pay ? down 19 percent to $18.7 million, according to Associated Press formulas for executive compensation, though the bank calculates that it cut his pay by half.

At an investor conference in February, Dimon dismissed the groups lobbying to separate the jobs as "all the union investors," and called the debate "a sideshow." He also said that he wouldn't have gone to Bank One, a troubled Chicago bank that he took over and turned around in the early 2000s, if the bank hadn't given him the leeway to be both chairman and CEO. "Troubled company, big turnaround, divided board?" he said. "Not me. Life is too short."

It's not clear what would happen if shareholders vote to take away Dimon's chairman job. The proposal is non-binding, so technically the bank doesn't have to follow it. In 2009, shareholders at Bank of America voted to split the jobs, and the bank took away the chairman title from chairman and CEO Ken Lewis. Later that year, he resigned from the bank entirely.

Last year, shareholders at just four U.S. companies voted to split chairman and CEO roles, according to ISS. So far this year, shareholders at only one company, department store chain Kohl's, have voted to separate the jobs.

At a public company, the board is essentially supposed to be the boss of the CEO, hiring and firing him and reining him in from risky practices that could hurt shareholders. Shareholder activists say that if the CEO is also running the board, then the board can hardly police him. Many companies argue that the CEO knows the company better than anyone and is best equipped to run the board as well.

Dimon, 57, a native of Queens and grandson of a Greek immigrant, is an essential player in banking's world order. During a time of increased public anger against the industry, and as some of his peers tried to fly under the radar, he was outspoken, defending big paydays for bankers and criticizing some of the government's proposed new rules for the industry. He was President Obama's confidante in the banking industry, and then the banking leader with the guts and credibility to challenge him.

"He's obviously a brilliant executive," said Brandon Rees, acting director of the investment office at the AFL-CIO, a union group that supports splitting the roles. "But it's a rare quality for brilliance to be accompanied by lack of hubris."

Not everyone thinks that getting rid of Dimon would be best for shareholders. CLSA analyst Mike Mayo predicts that the stock would plunge 10 percent, noting there's no obvious successor. Nomura analyst Glenn Schorr, writing to clients last week after a meeting with Dimon, said he found it "fascinating" that investors were considering "shrinking the role of one of the best managers there's ever been in the business."

What everyone agrees on is this: From a public relations perspective, it's been a tough year at JPMorgan Chase & Co. Many of Dimon's highest-level executives have departed, including co-chief operating officer Frank Bisignano, who left in April to become CEO of payment processor First Data. The bank is also under extra scrutiny from regulators who are examining not only the trading loss but also the bank's foreclosure practices, its controls for preventing money laundering and other areas.

"Let me be perfectly clear: These problems were our fault, and it is our job to fix them," Dimon wrote in the annual letter to shareholders this year. "In fact, I feel terrible that we let our regulators down."

SKorea says NKorea fires 3 short-range missiles

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? North Korea fired three short-range guided missiles into its eastern waters on Saturday, a South Korean official said. It routinely tests such missiles, but the latest launches came during a period of tentative diplomacy aimed at easing tensions.

The North fired two missiles Saturday morning and another in the afternoon, South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok said by phone. He said the North's intent was unclear. His ministry said it is watching North Korea carefully in case it conducts a provocation against South Korea.

In March, North Korea launched what appeared to be two KN-02 missiles off its east coast. Experts believe the country is trying to improve the range and accuracy of its arsenal.

North Korea recently withdrew two mid-range "Musudan" missiles believed to be capable of reaching Guam after moving them to its east coast earlier this year, U.S. officials said. The North is banned from testing ballistic missiles under U.N. Security Council resolutions.

Earlier this year, North Korea threatened nuclear strikes on Seoul and Washington because of annual U.S.-South Korean military drills and U.N. sanctions imposed over its third nuclear test in February. The drills ended late last month. This past month, the U.S. and South Korea ended another round of naval drills involving a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier off the east coast. North Korea calls such drills preparation to invade the North.

Analysts say the recent North Korean threats were partly an attempt to push Washington to agree to disarmament-for-aid talks.

This past week, Glyn Davies, the top U.S. envoy on North Korea, ended trips to South Korea, China and Japan. On Friday, an adviser to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe returned from North Korea but didn't immediately give details of his talks with officials there.

On Monday, North Korean state media showed that the country's hard-line defense minister had been replaced by a little-known army general. Outside analysts said it was part of leader Kim Jong Un's efforts to tighten his grip on the powerful military after his father Kim Jong Il died in December 2011.

The United States and Japan are participants in six-nation nuclear disarmament talks along with the Koreas, Russia and Japan. North Korea walked out of the talks in 2009 after the United Nations condemned it for a long-range rocket launch.

North Korea possesses an array of missiles. U.S. and South Korean officials do not believe the North's claim that it has developed nuclear warheads small enough to place on a missile. Last week in Washington, South Korean President Park Geun-hye and President Barack Obama warned North Korea against further nuclear provocations.

Tension between the two Koreas remains high after both sides pulled out their workers from a jointly run factory complex earlier this year. The countries remain technically at war after the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce instead of a peace treaty.

US balks as Russia prepares to deliver missiles to Syria (+video)

Israel says Russia is preparing to deliver anti-aircraft missiles and launchers to the Assad regime, which the US warns will further destabilize a troubled region.

By Fred Weir,?Correspondent / May 10, 2013

Russian President Vladimir Putin and US Secretary of State John Kerry (r.) arrive for their meeting in the Kremlin, Moscow, Tuesday. Kerry is making his case to Putin for Russia to take a tougher stance on Syria at a time when Israel's weekend air strikes against the beleaguered Mideast nation have added an unpredictable factor to the talks.

The United States has appealed to Russia to stop the reported delivery of six batteries of advanced S-300?anti-aircraft missiles to the Syrian government, warning that this type of weaponry threatens to "destabilize" the region.

According to media reports, the US was alerted this week by Israel that Russia is preparing to begin deliveries, perhaps as early as this summer, on a $900-million contract for six S-300 launchers with 144 of the long-range surface-to-air missiles. They are said to be the equivalent to the US Patriot system.

"We have consistently called on Russia not to provide a further supply of weapons to the Assad regime, including air defense systems that are particularly destabilizing to the region," White House press spokesman Jay Carney told journalists?on Thursday.

"I think we have made it crystal clear that we would prefer that Russia is not supplying assistance," to Syria, Secretary of State John Kerry told journalists during a visit to Italy.

"We have previously stated that [these] missiles are potentially destabilizing with respect to the state of Israel," he said.

Israel has carried out two airstrikes on Syrian targets in the past week, dramatically raising the stakes in the Syrian civil war, which is now in its third year.

Introduction of the S-300 into Syria's air defense arsenal could sharply limit the future options not only for Israel but for the US as well, should it decide to intervene in the conflict.

The latest version of the S-300 reputedly has a range of 125 miles, can engage 12 targets simultaneously, and can strike missiles or aircraft at altitudes of up to 20 miles.

The US and Israel waged a long and ultimately successful diplomatic campaign to persuade Russia to renege on a contract it had signed many years ago to provide S-300 missiles to Iran.

But since agreeing in 2010 to cut off arms supplies to Iran, the Kremlin has dug in its heels and refused to sign on to any more sanctions against its dwindling number of client states.

Russia has an estimated $5 billion in outstanding arms contracts with Syria, mostly sophisticated anti-aircraft weapons, tactical surface-to-surface missiles, submarines, warships, and training aircraft.

Though Moscow has not yet commented on the allegation that it is preparing to deliver S-300s to Syria, Russian officials have repeatedly insisted that they are acting within the framework of international law in honoring arms contracts with a long-standing ally that is not subject to any United Nations-approved sanctions.

Moscow also complains that the US continues to sell huge amounts of modern arms to its Arab clients, such as Saudi Arabia, some of whom it says are surreptitiously arming the Syrian rebels.

The fresh accusations against Russia for supplying arms to Syria come just days after Mr. Kerry met with President Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin and agreed on the need for Russia and the US to combine efforts in a joint push to find a peaceful settlement to the spiraling Syrian conflict.

The Jolie Seem Is In Top Augmentation ? Shopping and Product ...

?

Total lush mouth are becoming ever more popular, thanks to The show biz industry movie stars. Your Angelina Jolie look is in, plus more women are searhing for lip development. Collagen offers, for the greatest time, taken claim since the leading realtor used for lip enhancement. Even so, results are non permanent, and so long lasting lip augmentation have been developed.

?

The implant consists of material designed specifically for your safe and effective development of soft muscle, such as lip area. One example of this would be the restylane injections. The product also comes in different sizes as well as shapes to fit each patient?s certain needs, in addition to desires, in a very perfectly sterile package made for only one solitary use. The particular surgical strategy is performed in the sterile fashion. Like a lot of cosmetic surgical procedures nowadays, top augmentation is completed by using really precise ways to increase the successful appearance with the insert, and also minimize recovery time. This combination is the best for anyone considering cosmetic surgery.

?

There are literally hundreds of improvements for different top shapes, dimensions, and width. Since every person has a different mouth area, and a distinct desired search, there have to be just as many choices to meet each of the demands. The best way to figure out which implant is right for you is to meet with the physician, describe just what look you?re seeking (be as specific as is possible, every detail are only able to help the selection process), then see precisely what he/she suggests. Not like collagen, these kind of implants are generally permanent, but when you have the surgical procedure and for a number of reason are usually unsatisfied along with how it seems, lip augmentations are generally simple enough to remove without threat of problems. For any concern with scarring: remember that the cuts are made no more than possible inside the lips, therefore there may be very tiny marks, these are on your own lips, which can make them even more undetectable.

?

?

?

An obvious question arises: is there any change in sensation? The answer is indeed, but only ahead of time during the time to recover. It is not strange for a individual to really feel some numbness, maybe slight tingling, but over time your current lips can return to typical. And no, the implant is not detectable any time kissing. In case you press your fingers very trying to your lip area you might glance at the implant, may well being the main element word.

?

Complications are uncommon for this process, though they do exist. Your current specialist will be able to give you the entire list. In the event the Angelina Jolie seem is the one particular you?re looking for, and you?re tired of duplicate treatments, this could very well be the remedy you?re looking for.

Indonesia extends forest-clearing ban for 2 years

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) ? Indonesia has extended a landmark ban on clearing primary rainforests and peatlands for another two years, a move greeted by environmentalists with praise and skepticism.

Presidential environment adviser Pungki Agus Purnomo said Thursday that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (soo-SEE'-loh BAHM'-bahng yoo-doh-YOH'-noh) signed the decree to continue the 2011 moratorium, which barred new logging and palm oil plantation permits under a $1 billion deal with Norway.

Purnomo said the ban will preserve 64 million hectares (158 million acres). It will not affect areas where concessions were granted before the moratorium.

Environmentalists argue the government is not doing enough to fight corruption and protect areas from illegal fires and logging.

Indonesia has become one of the world's largest greenhouse gas emitters as it supplies the world with palm oil, pulp and paper.

Health News - Emotional response to climate change influences ...

BUFFALO, N.Y. ? Sixty-two percent of Americans now say they believe that global warming is happening, but 46 percent say they are ?very sure? or ?extremely sure? that it is not. Only 49 percent know why it is occurring, and about as many say they?re not worried about it, according to the April report of the Yale Project on Climate Change Communication.

Because information about climate change is ubiquitous in the media, researchers at the University at Buffalo and the University of Texas, Austin, looked at why many Americans know so little about its causes and why many are not interested in finding out more.

The study, ?What, Me Worry? The Role of Affect in Information Seeking and Avoidance? was conducted by Z. Janet Yang, PhD, assistant professor of communication at UB, and Lee Ann Kahlor, PhD, associate professor of public relations and advertising at UT Austin.? It was published in the April 2013 issue of the journal Science Communication and is available at http://scx.sagepub.com/content/35/2/189

Yang says, ?Our key variables of interest were ?information seeking? and ?information avoidance.?

?We found that emotions have different impacts on both behaviors and that those with whom we socialize also are an important influence on our communication behaviors.?

In particular, according to Yang, the study found:

  • Those who had negative feelings toward climate change ? feelings marked by states of fear, depression, anxiety, etc., ? actively sought more information about climate change. They also saw climate change as having serious risks, and considered their current knowledge about it insufficient.
  • Those driven by a positive affect toward climate change ? an emotional state marked by hopefulness, excitement, happiness, etc. ? actively avoided exposure to additional information on the issue. They also said climate change presented little risk to nature and humans, and they viewed their knowledge about climate change as sufficient.
  • Our social environment has the potential to strongly influence whether we seek or avoid climate change information. ?This, the researchers say, may be because we are most often around people who agree with us about important issues, reinforce our perception of risk and support or discourage further action.

The study involved an online survey of 736 undergraduates from two large U.S. universities (61.3 percent female, 62.5 percent white, median family income, $90,000).

The research survey was developed and executed using Qualtrics software and was designed to ascertain:

  • The subjects? general affect in relation to climate change ? positive (excited, hopeful,? happy) or negative (concerned, worried, anxious)
  • How much information about climate change they thought? they had and how much more they thought they needed
  • How severe they found the threat of climate change to be to themselves and to nature, and its impact around the world
  • How valuable they thought seeking information on the subject would be to them
  • How much they valued others? opinions toward seeking information about climate change
  • The confidence each had in his or her ability to find information about climate change

??Earlier research in social psychology has found that emotion, both positive and negative, is motivational and involves action tendency and action readiness,? Yang explains.

??Those with a negative affect may seek out information, even if it includes negative predictions, in order to reduce their uncertainty and perhaps reassert control over the situation,? says Yang.

??On the other hand, those with a positive affect who say they avoid seeking information may do so because they want to maintain their uncertainty ? and their emotional equilibrium ? from negative information that might upset them as well as contradict the attitudes of their social support group.?

The researchers say the study results present several ways to improve the communication of risk information related to climate change. They say the data on subjects? reported information sufficiency suggests that risk communication about climate change might benefit from these approaches:

  • Arousing a sense of curiosity and debunking false beliefs about ecological risks so people are not complacent about what they already know
  • Highlighting potential negative consequences and fostering a positive attitude toward learning about climate change
  • Monitoring the audience?s social environment and its perceived ability for finding and understanding information about climate change
  • Promoting optimism that human action, such as reducing greenhouse gas, could actually combat the consequences of climate change.

Yang conducts research centered on the communication of risk information related to science, health and environmental issues, and on social cognitive variables that influence information seeking and processing, health decision making and public perception of environmental and health risks.

Kahlor?s research is centered on health and environmental risk communication with an emphasis on mass communication of complex science and information seeking. ?

Movie Review: Snitch | Sassi Sam Girlie Gossip Files

at the movies banner_final

Directed by: Ric Roman Waugh
Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Susan Sarandon, Jon Bernthal, Melina Kanakaredes
Sassi?s Star Rating: 3/5

The Rock takes a serious turn as a father who would do anything for his son in the new action/drama Snitch. It?s a smart departure for the guy who if you look at his release schedule, seems to be the hardest working man in Hollywood at the moment. Somewhere between WWF SmackDown! and Fast and the Furious 6 he has really honed his ability to deliver a good performance. With Snitch, Johnson proves his acting chops and flips the bird (figuratively offcourse) to all of his deriders.

Snitch_Movie_Poster

When the son of self-made businessman John (Johnson) and his estranged wife Sylvie (Melina Kanakaredes) is arrested for possession of narcotics with intent to distribute, both are shocked. Jason (Rafi Gavron) is a good kid who has always run with a good crowd. But having signed for a package from a friend which turned out to be filled with methamphetamines, Jason is facing a minimum ten year gaol sentence ? unless he snitches to the cops and helps them make another drug arrest.

Not knowing any dealers, and refusing to set anyone up the way his friend did him, Jason refuses to co-operate with police. Luckily his father just happens to be one of the toughest men in show business and he strikes a deal with the politically ambitious District Attorney (Susan Sarandon) to bring down a major drug player in return for leniency on his son?s sentence.

Snitch_1

Written and directed by a former stuntman, and staring a pro-wrestler, you might expect all bang and no buck from this film. Instead what you get is an action filled drama rather than a drama filled action. Snitch is a slow burner and I mean that in the best kind of way. The premise is a difficult one to get past audience members so Waugh smartly spends his time kneading the concept into credibility. An unglamorous look at the drug underground and the system struggling to combat it, Snitch carefully piles on the tension so when those action sequences do come, they really explode.

Snitch_2

The titles will tell you that this is a true story ? but I initially thought marketers might have found a better strategy in leaving the whole thing off and just letting the audience go with the flow of the film instead of prompting them try and figure out in what world a US DA would ever support a civilian undercover operation to infiltrate drug cartels in exchange for his son?s freedom. Turns out it?s in this world those events would happen ? the true story claim is a real one, as chronicled the PBS Frontline special which inspired this script to be written. It?s an unsettling feeling when real life is stranger then fiction. Waugh and other writer Haythe?s treatment of the incredible story that has laid the groundwork for this film really works brings to the forefront just how out of control the war on drugs has become.

Snitch_3

Snitch also raises interesting questions about why the minimum sentence for first time drug offenders is less than that of rapists or murderers, and whether ?snitching? laws are targeting the right kind of criminal. It may be deafeningly clear which side of the fence this film sits on but it cannot be said that it doesn?t give you food for thought.

All in all Snitch boasts a solid cast and entertaining direction. I would have liked to have seen more of Benjamin Bratt who is engaging as Mexican cartel boss El Topo but isn?t given enough screen time to really play it out. Also good are Jon Bernthal as the ex-crim that reluctantly gets drawn back into the game, and Michael Kenneth Williams playing intimidating middleweight drug boss Malik.

Snitch_4

An entertaining film rooted in a compelling story and a solid performance from The Rock, Snitch is worth a trip to see on the big screen.

In cinemas now.

Mining the botulinum genome

The toxin that causes botulism is the most potent that we know of. Eating an amount of toxin just 1000th the weight of a grain of salt can be fatal, which is why so much effort has been put into keeping Clostridium botulinum, which produces the toxin, out of our food.

The Institute of Food Research on the Norwich Research Park has been part of that effort through studying the bacteria and the way they survive, multiply and cause such harm. In new research, IFR scientists have been mining the genome of C. botulinum to uncover new information about the toxin genes.

There are seven distinct, but similar, types of botulinum neurotoxin, produced by different strains of C. botulinum bacteria. Different sub-types of the neurotoxin appear to be associated with different strains of the bacteria. Genetic analysis of these genes will give us information about how they evolved.

Dr Andy Carter, working in Professor Mike Peck's research group, used data generated from sequencing efforts at The Genome Analysis Centre, on the Norwich Research Park. Andy compared the genome sequence of five different C. botulinum strains, all from the same group and all producing the same sub-type of neurotoxin.

An initial finding was that the five strains were remarkably similar in the area of the genome containing the neurotoxin gene. This suggests that the bacteria picked up the gene cluster in a single event, sometime in the past. Bacteria commonly acquire genes, or gene clusters, from other bacteria through this horizontal gene transfer. It is a way that bacteria have evolved to share 'weapons', such as antibiotic activity or the ability to produce toxins. To find out more about how C. botulinum acquired its own deadly weapon, Andy delved deeper into the genome sequence.

Like fossils of long lost organisms, Andy found, in the same region of the genome, evidence of two other genes for producing two of the other types of neurotoxin. Although these gene fragments are completely non-functional, finding them in the same place in the genome as the functional neurotoxin gene cluster is significant as it suggests that this region of the genome could be a 'hotspot' for gene transfer.

Looking to either side of the neurotoxin gene cluster uncovered more evidence supporting the hotspot idea. When the gene cluster inserted into the C. botulinum genome, it cut in two another gene. This gene is essential for the bacteria to replicate its DNA, so why does destroying it not prove fatal? C. botulinum was unaffected by this because contained in the segment of imported DNA was another version of the chopped-up gene.

Perhaps this is pointing us to the way C. botulinum first picks up its lethal weapon. This should help us prepare against the emergence of new strains, and may even one day help us disarm this deadly foe.
